Search is becoming an answer. The companies that get cited will look different from the companies that used to rank.
For twenty years, the page-one promise was simple: earn a position, earn a click, and turn that click into a conversation. AI overviews have moved part of that journey upstream. A person can now ask a question, read a sourced summary, and never visit the ten blue links below it.
The click is moving upstream
This is not the end of search. It is a change in what search rewards. A model needs a clear entity, a source it can retrieve, and a page it can quote without inventing the missing context. The old work still matters, but rank alone is no longer a complete measure of visibility.
The companies that win will make their expertise legible. They will publish definitions, original evidence, and useful comparisons. They will earn mentions on properties that answer engines already trust. They will connect those pages so the whole subject makes sense to a reader and a retrieval system.
What operators should do now
Start with the questions customers ask before they know the product category. Write the answer a careful editor would approve. Put the company, product, people, and claims in plain language. Then watch citations and qualified visits alongside rankings.
The ten blue links are not disappearing overnight. The lazy version of SEO is.
